The course introduces the students to the Ancient Egyptian civilization from the early Stone Age to their conquest by the Persians and Greeks. It gives a comprehensive historical account on the rise and fall of the Egyptian dynasties, analyzes archeological and anthropological evidence, discusses religious, cultural and social patterns, and examines the earliest masterpieces of art and architecture in the Egyptian world.

The course is intended for history majors, Honors College students as well as undergraduate and graduate liberal studies students.

Classes meet Tuesdays 6:00-8:40

Grading will be based on two exams and a presentaion at the end of the semester.

This is a recommended supplement to the course on Ancient Egypt. It gives a comprehensive introduction to the Middle Egyptian language and culture of hieroglyphs, including writing, spelling, grammar, transliteration and translation.

Classes meet Thursdays 6:00-6:55

TRIP TO EGYPT (1 credit)

As part of the International Studies Program, the course has a trip to Egypt during the Spring Break with visits to major archeological sites such as the Fourth Dynasty pyramids and the Sphinx at Giza, and the royal tombs of the New Dynasty in the Valley of the Kings. The trip also includes a visit to the Cairo Antiquities Museum, the Bazaar Quarter in Cairo, and a four-day river cruise along the river Nile.
