The course introduces the students to the Ancient Egyptian civilization from the early Stone Age to their conquest by the Persians and Greeks. It gives a comprehensive historical account on the rise and fall of the Egyptian dynasties, analyzes archeological and anthropological evidence, discusses religious, cultural and social patterns, and examines the earliest masterpieces of art and architecture in the Egyptian world.

The course is intended for history majors, Honors College students as well as undergraduate and graduate liberal studies students.

This is a recommended supplement to the course on Ancient Egypt. It gives a comprehensive introduction to the Middle Egyptian language and culture of hieroglyphs, including writing, spelling, grammar, transliteration and translation.

TRIP TO EGYPT (1 credit)

As part of the International Studies Program, the course has a trip to Egypt during the Spring Break with visits to major archeological sites such as the Fourth Dynasty pyramids and the Sphinx at Giza, and the royal tombs of the New Dynasty in the Valley of the Kings. The trip also includes a visit to the Cairo Antiquities Museum, the Bazaar Quarter in Cairo, and a four-day river cruise along the river Nile.

Visit Memphis, Sakkara, the Pyramids, Sphinx, and Solar Boat Museum

March 15, 2004: Cairo
Visit the Egyptian Museum. Old Jewish, Coptic and Islamic Cairo. Ben Ezra Synagogue, Moallaka Church, and the Citadel. Tour Khan – El – Khalili Bazaar

March 16, 2004: Cairo/Nile Cruise
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Aswan (Option:Abu Simbel). Upon your arrival in Aswan. Transfer to board cruise ship in time for lunch. “Felucca” sailing around Elephantine and Kitchener’s Island, and the Agha Khan Mausoleum.

March 17, 2004: Nile Cruise
Visit Aswan High Dam Dam and its huge lake. Philae Temple. Stop at the ancient Granite Quarries. Sail to Kom – Ombo and tour Temples. Sail to Edfu

March 18, 2004: Nile Cruise
Today we visit the best preserved temple in all Egypt, Horus Temple at Edfu. Pass Esna lock. Visit Khnum Temple

March 19, 2004: Nile Cruise/Cairo
Cross the Nile to visit Colossi of Memnon, and Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt’s only female pharaoh. Visit the Valley of Kings and Queens where tombs of 65 pharaohs and 57 queens have been discovered, and enter some of them

March 20, 2004: Nile Cruise/Cairo
Your sightseeing begins at the Karnak Temple, where nearly all of the Egyptian pharaohs recorded their names and deeds for posterity. Continue your visit to the Luxor Temple. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Cairo. Upon arrival in Cairo, transfer to your hotel . Assistance with check-in
